A Canberra benchtop replacement costs $2,800 to $16,000 in 2026
A benchtop-only replacement in Canberra usually costs $2,800 to $5,500 for laminate, $6,500 to $13,500 for porcelain or sintered stone, and $7,500 to $16,000 for natural stone. The price moves most when the sink, cooktop, splashback or tired cabinets need work at the same time.
Real 2026 unit rates we would defend
Benchtop replacement is cheaper than a full kitchen renovation because the carcasses, flooring and most services stay where they are. It is still not just a slab price. You are paying for demolition, careful protection, templating, fabrication, transport, fitting, sealants, plumbing disconnection and reconnection where needed.
| Item | Typical Canberra 2026 rate | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate benchtop supplied and fitted | $450 to $850 per linear metre | Postform is cheapest. Square edge, compact laminate and thicker profiles cost more. |
| Porcelain or sintered stone supplied and fitted | $950 to $1,850 per linear metre | Large islands, mitred edges and waterfall panels add fabrication time. |
| Natural stone supplied and fitted | $1,050 to $2,200 per linear metre | Quartzite and marble selection, slab yield and edge detail drive the spread. |
| Removal and disposal | $450 to $1,400 per kitchen | Tiled tops and old stone are slower and heavier than laminate. |
| Sink or tap plumbing visit | $550 to $1,200 | New mixer, trap changes or poor access under the sink increase time. |
| Cooktop electrical visit | $450 to $1,300 | Induction can need a dedicated circuit rather than a simple reconnect. |
| Splashback make-good | $600 to $2,800 | Replacing only the bottom tile course is cheaper than full retile or glass. |
If you are also changing doors, panels and handles, compare this with our kitchen makeover service. If the layout is wrong, a benchtop replacement will only make the old kitchen look newer. The full renovation calculator is the better tool for that decision.
The 4 variables that move the quote most
Material choice is the obvious one. Laminate is fast, tidy and honest for rentals in Belconnen, student share houses in Dickson and budget pre-sale work in Woden. Porcelain and sintered stone cost more because the sheets are brittle before they are installed and need careful cutting. Natural stone can look excellent, but every slab is different and wastage matters.
Cabinet condition is the hidden one. Canberra homes from the 1970s and 1980s often have particleboard cabinets that have seen a few leaks under the sink. If the top rails are swollen, the new benchtop may not sit flat. A small levelling job is fine. A rotten sink cabinet is not fine and should be repaired before you spend money on a premium surface.
Cut-outs and joins matter because they create risk. A straight galley kitchen is simple. An island with an undermount sink, a flush cooktop, waterfall sides and a tight lift through an apartment stairwell is not. Kingston and Molonglo apartments often add access planning because lift bookings and strata rules can limit delivery windows.
Plumbing, electrical and splashback work can turn a one-trade job into a coordinated job. If the sink stays in place, the plumber may only disconnect and reconnect. If you change to an undermount sink or a wider cooktop, allow for extra trades. For tiled splashbacks, the bottom course often breaks when the old top comes out, so a small make-good allowance is sensible.

Worked example: Woden townhouse benchtop swap
A typical Woden townhouse has a 4.8 metre U-shaped kitchen, a laminate top, a drop-in sink and a freestanding cooker or standard cooktop. A defensible 2026 quote for a tidy upgrade might be: laminate square-edge benchtop at 4.8 m x $650, which is $3,120, removal and disposal at $650, plumber disconnect and reconnect at $650, cooktop reconnect allowance at $450, splashback bottom-row tile repair at $750 and cabinet packers at $350. The total is $5,970 including GST before any new sink, tap or appliance allowance.
The same kitchen in porcelain could be 4.8 m x $1,350, which is $6,480, plus $900 removal, $850 plumbing, $650 electrical, $1,200 splashback make-good and $450 cabinet levelling. That totals $10,530. The room looks sharper and lasts longer, but it is not automatically the best choice. If the cupboards are plain white melamine and the drawers already stick, we would rather quote a custom cabinetry repair or a staged renovation than put a premium surface on weak bones.
For older Canberra kitchens, ask about asbestos before demolition. Benchtop removal itself is usually clean, but backing boards, old vinyl flooring, splashback sheeting or wall linings in pre-1990 homes can change the plan. The right answer may be a smaller temporary top until you are ready for a larger, compliant renovation.
