Kitchen renovations in Dickson.

Dickson and Canberra’s inner-north are full of character — period and mid-century homes in established, sought-after streets. We do the kind of kitchen work these homes deserve: heritage-sympathetic, high-end, with custom cabinetry and quality stone that respects the house.

Why Dickson

The Dickson kitchen story.

Inner-north character — period and mid-century homes.

Dickson sits in Canberra’s established inner-north, surrounded by Ainslie, Hackett, Watson, Lyneham and Downer — suburbs known for their early-Canberra cottages, mid-century homes and leafy, high-demand streets. The kitchens in these homes are often original or poorly renovated decades ago, and owners here want work that’s sympathetic to the character of the house while functioning as a thoroughly modern kitchen.

Heritage-sympathetic, high-end work.

The inner-north brief is rarely a budget rip-and-replace — it’s a considered, high-end renovation that fits the home. That can mean Shaker-style or timber cabinetry, a natural stone benchtop, and details that suit a period or mid-century aesthetic, all built to modern standards underneath. Our custom cabinetry is ideal here because character homes almost never have standard openings, and our design process makes sure the new kitchen sits naturally in the home.

Character homes need careful handling.

Older inner-north homes can have non-standard construction, sub-floor services to re-route, and bonded asbestos in mid-century wall sheeting, floor backing and old splashbacks — and the ACT carries the Mr Fluffy loose-fill asbestos legacy (1968–1980). We identify and arrange licensed removal of suspect materials before demolition, and where a renovation alters structure or the building envelope we advise on ACTPLA approval and any heritage or planning considerations. We get the paperwork right rather than risk a character home.

Modern standards under a classic finish.

A character kitchen still has to perform. We deliver compliant plumbing to AS/NZS 3500, electrical to AS/NZS 3000, and wet-area waterproofing to AS 3740 where it adjoins, all by ACT-licensed trades under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004. Compliant stone only after the 2024 engineered-stone ban. The result looks like it belongs in the house and works like a brand-new kitchen.
