How it works.

You call or use the quote form. The job goes to a local kitchen renovation business that can price it. That business quotes you directly and is responsible for its own licence, insurance and workmanship. We don’t charge you for the enquiry. Businesses we refer work to may pay us a referral fee.

• Builder licence: building work in the ACT is regulated under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004. Search the builder on the Access Canberra public register and check the licence is current, the class covers the work and the disciplinary history is clean.
• Licensed trades: plumbing, gas and electrical work must be done by separately licensed trades who issue compliance certificates.
• Cover before deposit: residential building work over $12,000 must be covered by the builder’s Statutory Warranty or a Fidelity Fund certificate. Get the certificate, naming your address and the contract value, before you pay a deposit. See the insurance check guide.
• Public liability: ask to see the certificate.
• Written quote and contract: an itemised, fixed-price quote, and any variation agreed in writing with a price before the work is done.
• Approvals: removing or changing a load-bearing wall usually needs ACTPLA building approval and a building certifier.
• Benchtop material: check the exact product against WorkSafe ACT engineered-stone guidance before ordering.
• Older homes: in pre-1985 homes, suspect asbestos should be tested and removed by licensed contractors before demolition.
