A district-by-district read on Canberra kitchens.

Belconnen & Tuggeranong — Canberra’s big 1970s–90s family districts, where the original closed-off kitchen is overdue for a full renovation and an open-plan reconfiguration. See Belconnen and Tuggeranong.

Gungahlin — the newer north, where builder-grade project-home kitchens are upgraded to custom cabinetry, stone benchtops and butler’s pantries by households with the budget to do it well. See Gungahlin.

Woden Valley — established, central, renovated to keep. Premium, design-led kitchens, with careful pre-1980 asbestos handling given the area’s Mr Fluffy history. See Woden.

Dickson & the inner-north — period and mid-century character homes wanting heritage-sympathetic, high-end kitchens built to modern standards underneath. See Dickson.

What every Canberra kitchen renovation should get right.

  • The right licences. Building, plumbing and electrical work to the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004 via Access Canberra, with ACTPLA approval where structure or footprint changes.
  • Compliant standards. Plumbing to AS/NZS 3500, electrical to AS/NZS 3000, wet-area waterproofing to AS 3740 where it adjoins.
  • Legal, safe stone. Only compliant benchtop materials after the 1 July 2024 engineered-stone silica ban — natural stone, porcelain, or low-silica engineered stone.
  • Asbestos handled, not hidden. In pre-1985 homes (and the ACT’s Mr Fluffy loose-fill legacy, 1968–1980) suspect materials are tested and removed by licensed contractors before demolition.
  • One fixed price. An itemised written quote and program before work starts — no surprises.
