Leak and swelling triage

Swollen kitchen cabinets in Canberra usually cost $450 to $9,000 to fix

A small dry cabinet repair is often $450 to $1,200. A wet sink cabinet replacement is usually $900 to $2,400 plus plumbing. If water has reached several carcasses, flooring or the benchtop support, allow $3,500 to $9,000 before deciding whether repair or renovation is smarter.

What you can safely do yourself

First, stop the water. Turn off the mini stop valves under the sink if the leak is from a tap hose, dishwasher hose or filter line. If there is no local shut-off, use the main water valve and call a plumber. Put a tray or towel under the leak, remove cleaning products from the cabinet, and take photos before you start drying. Photos matter for insurance and for a later quote.

Second, dry the cabinet without hiding the problem. Open doors, remove the kickboard if it clips off, run a fan and keep the area ventilated. Do not seal wet particleboard with paint, silicone or contact adhesive. That traps moisture and can make mould worse. If the leak was a one-off spill and the cabinet is still square, you may not need a tradesperson at all. A $15 tray under the sink and a 24 hour recheck can be enough.

Third, test the leak after drying. Put dry paper towel under the trap, run the sink, then run the dishwasher drain cycle if the hose connects there. If the paper stays dry and the cabinet has not swollen, you can monitor it. If the paper gets wet again, bring in a licensed plumber before paying for cabinetry. Cabinet repairs done before the leak is fixed are wasted money.

What can wait and what cannot

A dry stain can wait. Many Canberra kitchens have old staining under the sink from a past trap leak, especially in older Belconnen and Woden homes. If there is no smell, no active moisture, no swelling and the doors still line up, there is no need to pay a cabinetmaker today. Add it to your future makeover or full renovation plan.

Active water cannot wait. A leaking dishwasher hose or mixer hose can soak the cabinet base and run under floating floors in one evening. Canberra’s cold winters slow drying, and closed sink cabinets hold damp air. If the kitchen has a timber floor, laminate floor or apartment body corporate below it, treat escaping water as urgent.

A sagging benchtop is also urgent, even if the leak has stopped. Stone, porcelain and heavy laminate tops rely on level, continuous support. If the sink cabinet has collapsed, the top can crack around the sink cut-out. A temporary prop may reduce risk for a day or two, but it is not a repair. For a benchtop-specific decision, compare the numbers on our benchtop replacement cost page.

Not sure whether it is repair or renovation?

Send photos of the sink cabinet, kickboards, benchtop edge and the leak source. We will tell you if a cheaper repair is sensible.

How the repair is usually priced

For a single damaged sink cabinet, the job often starts with a plumber visit, then a cabinetry repair. The plumber might charge $350 to $650 to identify and fix a simple trap, mixer hose or dishwasher connection issue, more if parts or access are poor. The cabinetmaker then removes the swollen base, replaces the shelf or carcass, rehangs doors and adjusts hinges.

If the benchtop can stay in place, the repair is cheaper. If the top must come off, risk and labour increase. Laminate is relatively forgiving. Porcelain, natural stone and older engineered stone are not. Since conventional engineered stone is banned for new work, replacing an old damaged top with the same product is not a normal option. We would price compliant alternatives through our benchtops service.

For widespread damage, the honest question is whether the kitchen is worth saving. A $6,000 repair in a 25 year old kitchen with poor storage may only delay the real job. On the other hand, a $1,100 under-sink cabinet repair in a good 8 year old kitchen is exactly the sort of small, sensible work that avoids a premature renovation.

Water-damaged cabinet questions

What does water-damaged kitchen cabinet repair cost in Canberra?
Small cabinet repairs under a sink usually cost $450 to $1,200 if the leak is fixed and only the base panel or shelf is swollen. Replacing a sink cabinet is usually $900 to $2,400 plus plumbing. If several carcasses are swollen, a partial cabinetry replacement can run $3,500 to $9,000 before any new benchtop work.
Can swollen particleboard dry out and be reused?
No, swollen particleboard rarely returns to its original shape after it has taken up water. You can dry the area to stop mould and further damage, but bubbled panels, crumbling screw holes and bowed cabinet sides usually need replacement. A small cosmetic patch is fine only when the panel is non-structural.
Is a leaking sink cabinet urgent?
An active leak is same-day urgent for a plumber because every extra day can add $500 to $2,000 in cabinet and flooring damage. A dry old stain with no smell, no swelling and no movement can wait until your next renovation plan. Mould smell, soft floors or a sagging benchtop should be inspected within the same week.
Do I need a tradesperson for a small drip under the sink?
Not always. If the trap nut is only loose, you can place a tray underneath, dry the area and hand-tighten the fitting, then check it for 24 hours. If water continues, the cabinet base is swelling, or the leak is from a tap hose or wall point, pay for a licensed plumber rather than guessing.
Will insurance cover kitchen water damage?
Insurance may cover sudden escape of water, but usually not long-term leaks, poor maintenance or gradual swelling. Keep photos, plumber invoices and dates because a $1,000 repair can become a declined claim if the insurer thinks it was left for months. Ask the insurer before demolition if the damage is significant.
When is a full kitchen renovation better than repair?
A full renovation is usually better when the cabinets are more than 20 years old, several carcasses are swollen, the benchtop has to be removed, and the layout already frustrates you. Spending $5,000 on repairs before replacing the kitchen in 1 or 2 years is rarely sensible. For one damaged cabinet in an otherwise good kitchen, repair is the better call.
